This image shows a winter twig of a perennial woody dicot: Walnut (Juglans sp.) has alternate buds. Each has two bud scales and a very large heart-shaped leaf scar below. The scars of the vascular bundles of the leaf stem (petiole) can be seen in the centre of the leaf scar. The corrugations near the base of the twig are scars from the bud scales of a terminal bud. The amount of growth above this is one year’s increment.

The walnut twig is approximately 10 cm long.
